Pulgas Ridge is my place when I want a proper ride with trees and dirt. But you only have an hour left. There is usually a mid-week break from work before sundown in the summer, or before lunch on Saturday morning. The parking lot is small, so the path is usually not very crowded, and the dogs love the different smells here. Sometimes many ticks can be found in an environment with trees and shrubs. But I’ve never had a problem here and I ride all year round.

There are many hiking trails in Pacifica that could be on this list, but if you had to choose, Sweeney Ridge would be your choice. It’s a simple, hassle-free circular walk with an almost immediate view that continues as you reach the top of the ridge.

As a bonus, one of my dog’s favorite beaches is Fort Funston! Park here and go to the beach. It’s a big slope, so be careful!

One of our most anticipated activities is hiking in the Sierra Mountains around Lake Tahoe. I’ve hiked quite a bit there, including the Tahoe Rim Trail and the Desolation Wilderness, but I don’t know if there are any short dog-friendly hikes.
The path follows Capels Creek over a rock and descends to a beautiful meadow. We stopped for some fish and caught a few small brookies. There are mosquitoes but it’s not bad.
The trail climbs through the grass along the rock edge and then descends to the small pond. From there, the stream continues with dense vegetation until it finally rises to the lake.
The last climb is a tricky one. Aussies can do it on their own, but you may need to help your little dog with some parts.

Lake Margaret has a rocky shore to the east and offers good lunch spots. People jump off the cliff to swim. Nova also went swimming.
The Lake Margaret Trail was crowded even on weekdays, but not busy. We were able to find a private and secluded place for lunch.
There are two PCT trailheads at Carson Pass. The route starts at the beginning of the southern path. The parking fee is 5,000 won and there are also toilets.
The route starts in a pleasant forest past a small pond. There is a slight incline on the way to the lake, but not too steep.

After some time, the path breaks through the trees and becomes a low bush. If you walk in June or July, you can see beautiful wildflowers. The flat vegetation allows a view all the way west, with Caples Lake in the distance.
The trail goes past Frog Lake (it’s in the back, so you might miss the exit) and follows the PCT to Winnemucca Lake.
There are great places to swim and have lunch by the lake. If you like fishing, there are also small trout in the lake.
This is a popular walk, so expect lots of traffic and not much solitude. Parking fills up quickly, so get there early.
Take Fido Along
Exit Highway 50 onto Wrights Road and continue for 9 miles. The road is narrow and watery, but as long as you keep your eyes peeled and avoid the larger roads, you’ll be fine with normal vehicles.
The trailhead parking lot fills up quickly. We saw a sign telling us to park at the overflow and go up. It is an easy route from the overflow to the trailhead. Parking is free at the spillway and $8 at the start of the actual trail. There is a toilet at the beginning of the walk.
The trail begins at the edge of the wetlands around Wrights Lake. After about a third of a kilometer you start climbing over large granite boulders towards the lake.
The climb offers a beautiful view but it can be hot as there is little shade on the climb. About half way, the path crosses a small stream, where you can fill up with water if necessary.

Keep your eyes peeled for cairns and markers in the granite. One can easily lose one’s way at times.
There are great swimming and fishing spots along the lake. The road to Island Lake crosses the outlet of the lake, passes several small ponds, and becomes rockier as it ascends the last 200 feet to Island Lake.
Island Lake, unlike Twin Lakes, has more vegetation along its shoreline. While we were there, the rangers put nets in the lake to remove all the fish to save the endangered species of frogs.
The Twin Lakes trail was our favorite hike. Although it is quite popular, we can still find solitude and enjoy the lake in peace.
Best Dog Friendly Hikes Across The U.s. To Tackle With Your Canine Companion
It is an alternative to the Winnemucca Trail at Carson Pass. Less crowded and two lakes to visit. If you’re looking for an extra boost, I definitely recommend it for an alternative.
Parking costs $8, but you can park for free a little further on the other side of the bridge. There is a toilet at the entrance of the trail.
In a clockwise direction, the trail starts through a large forest and crosses several small streams. After a while, the forest gives way to low bushes and views. If you hike in June or July, you’ll see lots of wildflowers.
We stopped for lunch at Lake Winnemucca and left Nova swimming. At lunch we split the climb into two parts to make it more manageable.

The trail climbs another 500 feet above Lake Winnemucca to a small pass and then descends to Round Top Lake. The second lake is deeper and the willows are thick on the shore, so it is quite difficult to swim or take water.
Round Top Lake was full of people. We found a small pine forest near the lake, which provides solitude for a coffee break.
From the lake, the trail goes down through the grass and back through the woods towards Woods Lake. About half way you will pass an old mine and the remains of an old truck.
As it descends, you can see the lake in the forest below, but the trail does not pass unless you take the spur road to the campsite.
