Best Dog Vacations Midwest – While the Upper West isn’t known for its truck traffic, there are routes worth exploring. Instead of organized mountains or canyons, you will enjoy waterfalls, lake shores and forests. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t spectacular views of cliffs and wilderness stretching for miles in either direction.

The Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is 310 miles from the Minnesota-Wisconsin border south of Duluth to its northern end near the Canadian border. Numerous trails lead hikers along Minnesota’s North Shore to rocky cliffs, Lake Superior overlooks, cascading waterfalls, and dense forests.

Dogs may be on a leash on all 310 miles of this trail. Campers arrived, everyone got food, so you don’t have to plan your trip in advance to visit SHT months. Choose the ideal time of year and show off!

While SHT holds a big piece of my heart, the Porcupine Mountains are another great gathering place in the upper Midwest. Just a few hours from my home state of Minnesota, the Porcupine Mountains are located in the upper reaches of Lake Michigan.
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness is the largest state park in Michigan. Located in the Upper Peninsula, it includes 60,000 acres of forests, lakes and rivers along Lake Superior. The Porcupine Mountains form a 12-mile long ridge that parallels the Lake Superior Lakeshore 2.5 miles away. On a clear day you can see 25 miles west of this rock.
Car Travel With Dogs: Does Your Dog Deserve A Road Trip?
The park has 90 miles of hiking trails, 2 developed campgrounds, several backpacker campsites, and several backcountry cabins (cabins are not dog friendly). In addition to the rooms and buildings in the park, the park is also pet-friendly. However, like most parks in the Midwest, dogs must be kept on a 6-foot leash and cannot be left unattended.
Camping in the Porcupine Mountains costs $20 per night for a group of 1-6 people. Reservations are available six months in advance and 72 hours in advance at midnrreservations.com or 1-800-44PARKS. During the rest of the year, between October 15 and May 14, visitors must register at park headquarters.
The Border Rail Link (BRT) is a 65-mile line in the northeast corner of Minnesota. This is a beautiful, remote trail from the Canadian border to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The east end of this trail is outside the BWCA and is connected to the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). At the West BRT station, you can connect to the Kekekabik Trail and continue through the western half of the BWCA.
Dogs are allowed on this trail. They don’t have to be locked, but they should always be under control. There is plenty of game along the border road, including moose and bears. Therefore, it is important for the safety of everyone (you, your dog, the game and other visitors) that your dog stays with you, comes when called and does not disturb the game or other visitors.

You need a permit to stay overnight in the BWCA from May to September. At the time of writing this blog post, access costs $38. Prices may change in the future. This permit system helps support the Superior National Forest (the agency that manages the BWCA). It also helps limit the number of people using the road, making the area rugged, remote and wild. Permits can be found at Recreation.gov.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park has more than 60 miles of hiking trails and some beautiful backpacker campsites (or, if that’s your style, there are campsites and cabin rentals—yes, there’s even one dog-friendly cabin). Hiking trails take you through the forest to the rocky shores of Lake Superior or to Giant’s Peak with spectacular views of the surrounding area.
Sleeping Giant Provincial Park has a total of 27 backcountry campsites. These camps are divided into 7 zones. Individual campsites in each area are on a first-come, first-served basis.
