I just started traveling with my German Shepherd as a puppy. Our first trip was to Cape Elizabeth, ME when she was six months old, and I’m not going to lie, it was horrible (pun intended). I am always very worried. What if the hotel room is too noisy? What if an accident happens? What if there is an emergency?

I learned a lot from that first experience, and I’ve learned even more since then, and now I’m here to share the answers to these questions and the journey that takes place with dog owners. I look back now and am so glad I took the time and effort to enjoy his company while I was traveling. Are there designated dogs to work around or does the hotel have limited space? They are often happy to recommend activities in the area where dogs are friendly. Some offer services like dog walking or dog beds or water bowls so you can leave them at home.

Provide telephone contact information for the nearest 24-hour veterinary emergency hospital as well as your regular veterinarian. Make sure your energy is up to date with injections and medications before you leave home.

The last thing you want is for your dog to get away from you, especially when you’re in an unfamiliar place. For peace of mind, make sure your pet is microchipped before traveling.

Eating with your dog limits your options, as many states restrict pets from places that offer pet food. But if you do your research ahead of time, you can often find places that offer dog-friendly outdoor dining. It can be overwhelming – after all, you are on vacation! But keeping dogs on a regular schedule is very important. Do you usually go for a walk in the morning? Don’t forget to save. Does your dog usually sleep in a crate? Don’t let the rules slip and sleep in a hotel bed. Try to keep feeding times as consistent as possible.

Retreat to the recreation area to let your energy stretch your legs. On long trips, we always bring a stuffed toy and spend at least 5 minutes in the parking lot to burn off energy. We find that not only is it healthier for our pups, but it’s also better on the go!

Does your power take the caravan? Feed your dog before traveling to reduce symptoms. Stop often for fresh air, preferably 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours of driving. If you can do it reliably, try putting your dog in front of the car.

In the summer, take advantage of the long hours of daylight and cooler temperatures you’ll find in most other states. Or take a trip in the fall to take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage at one of the world’s best foliage viewing spots.

We are spending 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long vacation on Shod Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August, a week in Kempton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, NH ME in early October, three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (Also, we spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)

There’s never a bad time to be in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can be hot at night, but make sure your apartment has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. . which means our tolerance might be lower, ha!)

However, if you want to plan your trip for the beautiful fall foliage, we suggest you travel during the second week of October. While there are many places known for their foliage (eg Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the view is definitely worth it!

RTL Tip: Want more hiking or water time on your trip? Visit in July or August. Want a pleasant walk through the autumn leaves with a hot cider in hand? Visit in October. Want cool temperatures but little crowds? Visit in September.

Lincoln is definitely a fan of our trip because it’s easier for him to join us. We recommend driving if you are near any point on this trip. Drive this route to the nearest point and make a full circle to get home.

However, if you can’t get here by car and have a good dog on the plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend that you change this route and drive from Boston > Lake
