Dog Friendly Resorts Upstate Ny

Dog Friendly Resorts Upstate Ny – As a busy pet parent, I try to find time to take my puppy Zoe on dog adventures. I grew up in an outdoorsy family, and my childhood was full of hiking and traveling. I can’t wait to create some of these memories with my fur baby. That’s why I put on my hiking boots when we were offered an offline weekend getaway through Getaway Cabin Rentals!

I’ve always heard about people traveling to upstate New York, but I’ve never been there myself. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay at the Gateway House in the Catskill Mountains.

Getaway offers dog-friendly cabins within driving distance of New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Portland, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Future Gateway offers cottages near Los Angeles and Dallas. They make it so easy to go on holiday with your dog without having to worry about whether it’s pet-friendly or not. There are also plenty of dog parks and small towns waiting to be explored.

Together with my colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer, we text from the office and move away from the “always on” mentality and focus on the surroundings and the fresh mountain air.

We went to the cabin on Friday morning. It was much calmer than the usual drive to the office on a Friday morning.

Foggy weather forced us to drive 120 miles north while our travel songs blared and fresh air blew through the car windows. The dogs loved to sleep in the back seat, and each Zoe took it upon herself to make her own D out of my jacket.

Anxious four-legged travelers, especially on long trips, can definitely use a comforting treat, so we always keep one on hand. I’d like to take Zoe Dean with me when we head north.

Once we arrived at our dog-friendly home, the dogs were very interested in exploring and we led them around the grounds (or so they told us) before heading to our cozy little apartment. .

As soon as we all entered our cabin, we were amazed by the fresh smell of the forest and the beautiful bay window illuminated the entire room. The queen sized room was decorated with freshly laundered sheets, a small summer kit and favors and welcomed us into our home away from home for the next few days.

There was a small kitchen with everything you need for cooking, a small pantry for shopping, and a private bathroom with a shower with shampoo, conditioner, and a bathtub.

After dropping off our bags (see what we packed for the trip), we got back in the car and headed north to Albany, NY for coffee and lunch. We weren’t initially planning on visiting Albany, but insiders convinced us to skip the state capital because we’d never been there and were so close.

After getting some instant coffee at Stax Espresso Bar, a local dog-friendly coffee shop with a wide selection of teas, coffees, pastries, and milk options, we explored the city on foot and on foot.

Many Albany restaurants, shops and cafes welcome stuffed and well-fed pups, and we had plenty to explore in this wonderful state capital! We took a tour of historic Lark Street in New York City, which features former storefronts and brownstones. Next we headed to the New York City Department of Education building, which opened in 1912. We didn’t get a chance to go inside the building, but we were amazed by the 90-foot tall marble columns that line the façade. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the nearby green park and we went for a snack at the Iron Gate Cafe.

Iron Gate, located next door to the 1890s Horroy brownstone, offers fresh produce and vegan options, as well as a dog-friendly outdoor area. It was an enjoyable dinner with two well-behaved pups, but customers have to walk through outdoor tables to get into the restaurant, so it might be a little more difficult with a large or loud pup.

I ordered the Vermonster sandwich, a sandwich with turkey, cheddar cheese, apple, lettuce and maple nuts, and Danielle got the Buddha plate with roasted sweet potatoes, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa and tofu. We interrupted lunch when it started to rain.

We packed food, took the dog and tried to get to the car before it started to rain. Raising a pet isn’t perfect, but it does create perfect moments. Laughing at our doll’s muddy paws and messy hair, we finished our meal in the sturdy carport and headed back south.

Fortunately, the downpour was short-lived and passed within an hour. So we continued our plan to explore Kaaterskill Falls.

The first route to Kaaterskill Falls is on foot. This is a fairly easy dog-friendly hike that lasts about two hours.

We left the car in parking lot NY-23A, just around the corner from the curb. First, a small waterfall gave us a glimpse of the modest and magnificent view ahead. The parts were steep and rocky, but the 2.5 mile hike was worth it. The two-tiered waterfall is the longest in New York State and marks the end of the trail, giving us a chance to rest and enjoy our accomplishment.

Zoe and Sawyer were real soldiers. I recommend this hike for parents with dogs who are used to being outdoors, but watch out for small dogs as their paws may slip and get stuck between rocks. If you go, be sure to bring plenty of water for four-legged hikers and give them (and you!) time to rest and catch their breath along the way.

After the hike, we headed to the nearby Fortune Garden Chinese Restaurant (cash only) to grab some food to take back to the lodge. We sat down to dinner and fed our dogs. Sweet and sour chicken and Dr. Pepper never went together.

After everyone was fed, we lit a fire for dessert: the dinner set was waiting for us when we got home. Even a well-behaved puppy is recommended to be kept on a short leash to prevent him from getting too close to the fire (and tasty ingredients – chocolate is bad for dogs!). While we roasted marshmallows, Daniel and I chatted about our busy schedule for the day. Before we knew it, it was late and it was time for us and our babies to settle into our own nests and get a good night’s sleep.

Waking up the next morning in front of a large window overlooking a pine tree felt like a breath of fresh air, a view (and stress) I was used to! Zoe took her time snuggling into her soft blanket while I quickly and easily pulled out some Chewy Eats DIY patterned bars.

While the goodies were stored in the cabin refrigerator, we all wandered around the cabin, enjoying the beauty and serenity. The walk was quiet and peaceful, the air filled with the dogs’ excited squeals and applause. We didn’t see many people on the road near the house, but there were visitors over the weekend with furry, four-legged family members stopping by their home away from home. We wave to the dog parents before heading home to get ready for the day.

After loading our hiking boots and packing our hiking bags, we had breakfast. We went to Circle W Market for some fresh food and drinks as suggested by Getaway.

This cute little market is perfect for furry adventurers. It has a small outdoor area and a selection of sweet and savory dishes to start any day. We enjoyed cold beer, lemonade, orange juice and matcha lattes, as well as grilled turkey panini, waffles and avocado toast.

Per Year Before adopting Zoe in 2017, I had always heard that Pugs are not very athletic dogs and get tired easily due to their short noses. Oh my god, my pug proved them wrong! Always two steps ahead of me, literally and figuratively, Zoe led our group of four on the 5-mile round trip to Overlook Mountain.

Getting to the top of Overlook Mountain was a little more challenging, although there was less gravel and rocks than Catterskill Falls. We had to push forward to overcome the steady incline, but the fresh air and thick fog filled us with anticipation. And this curiosity does not disappoint!
