Louise Glazebrook, a 40-year-old dog and puppy behaviorist, highlighted the issue in an Instagram post on Thursday, August 5.
Glazebrook was on her way to London with her children and family dog Pip when she stopped at a spare petrol station in Cambridge so her eight-year-old son could use the toilet.
“I stopped and looked at the 28 degree thermometer in the car, and then I realized I was alone with the kids,” she said.
“When it’s 22 degrees, the RSPCA strongly advises against leaving your dog in the car, even on a relatively warm day, as it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees in a car within an hour.

Left with no choice, Glazebrook got out of the car with the kids and Pip and went to the entrance of the gas station, where her son was running and waiting to use the bathroom.
“Leaving Pip in the car didn’t even feel like an option, but I felt very uncomfortable getting my son in alone.
“I basically had to choose between the safety of my dog and my child, who could die in a hot car,” she added.
Glazebrook’s Instagram post has since been viewed more than 3,000 times, with many dog owners sharing their experiences of the struggles their pets have faced when traveling alone.

On its website, Moto asks people not to leave animals in the car, but to keep them tied up in a safe place.
However, the RSPCA has rejected this advice as dog thefts have risen by 170% during the epidemic, according to the charity Doglost.
“We do not advise owners to leave pets on a leash outside shops or petrol stations, but in hot weather it is very dangerous to leave pets in cars as they can overheat very quickly,” a spokesman said.
“We would like to see more dog-friendly provisions in places like petrol stations so people can use these facilities and keep their pets safe,” they added.

: “Highway gas stations can put responsible dog owners traveling with their pets in a very difficult situation by not leaving their dogs.

“We want to work with organizations like this to help make travel more dog-friendly. In the meantime, we encourage owners to organize trips at dog-friendly stops.”

“While most pet owners accept responsibility for their pets, there can be no guarantee that they will be kept under control throughout the trip,” he added.
Roadchef said a number of temporary outdoor toilet facilities had been set up in the summer to accommodate dog owners in the busiest areas such as Sedgemoor and Taunton Deane.
He added: “If a member of the public contacts us before a visit and explains their situation, we will make every effort to ask a member of the team to look after the dog when they visit our toilet facilities.”
