Lake Tahoe is divided into northern and southern lakes. Both areas offer similar activities throughout the year, but North Lake is known to be more relaxing than South Lake. We spent most of our winter visits in Southlake, but split our time between the two for our summer trip and enjoyed each as much as the other.

To get the full Lake Tahoe summer experience, you should visit after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. We came to Tahoe Memorial Day weekend once and it snowed! Come early in the summer if you don’t mind 80 degree days. Unfortunately, Tahoe continues to see higher and higher temperatures each summer due to global warming, but like the rest of California, it gets noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings. So don’t forget your layers.
I would avoid coming on weekends like the 4th of July. Accommodation is really expensive and the lake is full. I keep an eye out for golf tournaments with high prices and crowds, as there are several played in the Tahoe area each year.
If you are traveling to Tahoe, we recommend a trip to Reno and you want to rent a car. If you’re driving, be sure to head out at your leisure to beat the crazy traffic up and down the lake on weekends. Bay Area residents practice on Fridays during the summer, so avoid driving on Friday afternoon and going out on Sunday afternoon. These times of day can easily add an hour or two to your travel time. We also recommend planning for daylight when driving. This is one of our favorite scenic drives that you won’t want to miss. If you enter South Lake on Route 80, the road is a little windier and less dangerous during the day.
There are plenty of options when it comes to dog-friendly lodging in Lake Tahoe. If you prefer to rent a hotel or a house, we recommend that you choose accommodation based on the location of your activity and the mobility of the area you are looking for. For long-term rental homes or hotels with the comforts of home, we prefer a backyard or nearby grassy area. We stayed in Coachman for the weekend and rented several houses and apartments through AirBnB and VRBO. We were supposed to stay in this setting during our last visit, but they had a home emergency with a broken pipe, so it’s still on our wish list.

I usually like to find a place to stay within 30 minutes of most of our activities so we spend more time exploring than driving. If you spend a lot of time in Tahoe, you should consider splitting your time between the North and South Lakes – the entire lake is truly worth the experience! – Plan your activities accordingly.

Emerald Bay is located 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe. Cars cannot access the lake, but there are many views and hiking trails. This is a great place to watch the sunset at Inspira Point, with free parking next to the viewing point.
It should appear around 7:00 PM to see the sunset. It’s the perfect photo time to capture the sun setting behind the trees, then sit back and watch the colors of the sky change as sunset approaches around 8:20 p.m.

Another lookout across the lake is the Emerald Bay State Park Lookout, which is worth a visit, but only before sunset. There is also parking at this view, if full, there is parking on the side of the main road. The position of this view is that the sun loses its visibility around seven o’clock in the evening. Plan to visit here first, starting with the sun setting behind the trees, and if you want to do both, head to Inspiration Point for a few minutes.
Summer hiking and water skiing are dog-friendly places in Tahoe. AllTrails also has a great interactive map that shows all the dog-friendly trails around Lake Tahoe, so it’s easy to find trails near where you live or choose which trails to add to your hiking list. We did all of the Southlake hikes and loved every trail we chose.
I usually look for easy to moderate hikes no longer than 3 hours. We like to combine this with Ruby’s regular morning walks for early morning walks, which usually allow us to beat the crowds and get good light and a spot to shoot. After searching AllTrails and some Tahoe blogs, I found these hikes on the first few days of our trip to South Lake Tahoe.
The Fallen Leaf Trail is an out-and-back trail near South Lake Tahoe. This path is usually considered a very difficult path, but we consider it relatively easy. There are a few tree stands and some inclines along the way, but the trail is clear and relatively flat. You have to watch your footing as the trail is mostly rocky with dirt tracks.

This is a very popular place for hiking, so you can meet other people while exploring. The road is open year-round and the road is not plowed in winter, but it is beautiful to visit at any time. On our trip we encountered many dogs, sometimes some of them were tied.
To access the trail, you must pay a $10 user fee at the entrance to Fallen Leaf Lake Campground. The employee will give you a hang-up sign on the dashboard, then you will turn around and go down the road to the left of the entrance to the day-use parking lot. The parking lot is half a mile down the road and you will see it on the far side of the road on your left. There are about 20 properties in the day use area and there is a road directly in front of you where it intersects with the main road.
The path begins with beautiful views of the lake, where you can go down to the beach. Several dogs drank water for a long time. There are a few benches along the way if you want to sit and enjoy the view, on the way back we noticed a couple of campers heading to the water to stake out their spots at midnight.
As you continue to the left on the trail, it weaves and weaves along the edge of the lake, offering different views of the lake, the landscape, and some shady spots. The trail is generally well defined for the first 1.5 miles. I recommend using AllTrails during your trip to stay on track, we went a little further and ended up in an unmarked open wooded area.

AllTrails says this hike usually takes an hour, but we spent two hours here with photo stops and little adventures of our own.
Make sure you pack plenty of water for you and your dog and pack all your belongings. It’s worth noting that there are no trash cans in this area, not even at the trailhead, so be prepared to pick up anything your dog might leave behind.
Chimney Beach Trail is 2.8 miles near Carson City, Nevada. This trail is a little more central to the lake, but close to South Lake, especially if you live near the Stateline area. It is a very popular place for hiking, canoeing and picnicking, so you can meet others.
