Dog Friendly Vacations In Upstate Ny – Like many busy pet parents, I try to make time to take my dog Zoe on dog outings. I grew up in an outdoorsy family and my childhood was full of travel and adventure. I can’t wait to make those memories again with my furry dog. So when we had the opportunity to open a weekend through the Getaway rental company, I got my hiking boots on!
I’ve always heard people go to upstate New York, but I’ve never visited it myself. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I was offered the opportunity to stay at the Getaway House in the Catskill Mountains.

My colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer and I left our messages outside the office and headed north to get away from our “regular” thoughts and enjoy some beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air.
We left the garage on Friday morning. It was more relaxing than going to the office on a Friday morning, that’s for sure.
The air conditioner was designed to travel 120 miles northbound. The sound of the horn and a stream of fresh air from the car windows. The dogs were happy to sleep in the back seat and Zoe took it upon herself to get out of my wardrobe.
Four-legged travelers can benefit from blankets, especially on long trips, which we keep on hand. I think I took Zoe on a trip up north.

When we arrived at our dog house, the dogs weren’t excited to explore them and we took them around the property (or rather, they took us) before heading to our small and cozy house. .
We enjoyed the smell of fresh wood when we entered our apartment and the beautiful window lit up the whole space. Big queen d was wrapped in washed sheets and a small box of s’mores and a letter welcoming us home for the next few days.
There is a kitchenette with all the necessary cooking equipment, a small kitchen where you can buy snacks and a shower room with shampoo, conditioner and body lotion.
After dropping off our bags ( see what we packed for our trip ) we got back in the car and headed to Albany, NY for a cup of coffee and dinner. We hadn’t originally planned to visit Albany, but since we’d never been there before, and weren’t even close, our explorers went in for our state capital fix.

After a quick coffee at Stacks Espresso Bar – a dog-friendly cafe offering a variety of teas and coffees, treats and a variety of milks – we explored the city on foot and leg.
Many of Albany’s restaurants, shops, and restaurants welcome cute and cuddly dogs, and there’s plenty to explore in this state capital! We walked along the famous Lark Street, where old shops and black bricks reminded us of New York City. Then we went to the building of the New York State Department of Education, which was opened in 1912. We did not have the opportunity to enter the building, but at first we were surprised by its 90-meter-high stone columns. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the nearby grassy yard before we headed to the Iron Gate Cafe for dinner.
Housed in the brownstone of the 1890 Holroyd Mansion, Iron Gate offers fresh food and vegan options, as well as a dog-friendly patio. It’s comfort food with two adorable dogs, although it’s more difficult to eat with large or noisy pups, so diners walk in instead of sitting outside in the restaurant.
I ordered the Vermonster sandwich—a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, apples, lettuce, and plantains—and Danielle had the Buddha bowl with roasted potatoes, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa, and tofu. We were halfway through our lunch when it started to rain.

We packed up the food, got the dogs, and tried to get to the car before the rain started. Farming isn’t ideal, but it works when it’s needed. Laughing at our puppies’ dirty feet and messy hair, we finished our meal in the cramped space of the car and headed back south.
Fortunately, the spring rain was short and the rain left us within an hour. So we continued with our plan to explore Kaaterskill Falls.
The trail to Kaaterskill Falls is on foot. It is an easy dog walk of about 2 hours.
We left our car at the NY-23A parking lot, just around the corner from the crosswalk. A small waterfall at the beginning gave us an amazing view of what lay ahead. Although steep and rocky in places, the 2.5 mile hike is worth checking out. A double-decker waterfall—the tallest in New York State—marked the end of the trail and gave us a chance to relax and enjoy our work.

Zoe and Sawyer are soldiers. I recommend this hike to parents who are used to outdoor hikes, but be careful with small dogs as their feet are slippery and can get stuck on rocks. If you go, bring extra water for your four-legged friends and take breaks along the way to give them a chance to breathe (and you, too!)
After our tour, we went to a nearby Chinese restaurant (cash only) called Fortune Garden to get a pickup to take us back to our apartment. We feed our dogs their treats and sit down to dinner. Sweet and Sour Chicken and Dr. Pepper have never had a better and more satisfying match.
After every mouthful was filled, we built a fire to eat the dessert: smores were waiting for us when we arrived at our accommodation. Even though they are cute puppies, I recommend keeping them on a short leash to keep them out of the fire (and s’mores food – chocolate is poisonous to dogs!). While we were roasting marshmallows, Danielle and I talked about the events of Labor Day. Before we knew it, it was too late for us and the pups to go back to our room for a good night’s sleep.
Waking up the next morning to the big window overlooking the pines was like a breath of fresh air compared to the view (and headache) I was used to! Zoe got off her red dress when I made a quick and easy DIY Chewy Eats snack to take with us on the day of the run.
Places To See On A Pet Friendly American Road Trip
With the goodies from our fridges in a box, we all take walks in the yard to enjoy the beauty and peace. The walk was calm and peaceful, happy dogs and paws filling the air. We didn’t see many people near the cabins on the trail, but in the distance some hikers moved in with a furry, four-legged family for the weekend. We give the dog’s parents a friendly wave as they return to our apartment to get ready for the day.
We fixed the road poles, packed our bags for walking and set out for breakfast. After the Getaway concept, we went to Circle W Market for fresh food and drinks.
For furry travelers, this cute little market has an outdoor seating area, and the sweet and savory options are a great start to any day. We enjoyed the roasted turkey panini, waffles, and avocado dessert, as well as cold beer, lemonade, orange juice, and matcha lattes.
Before I adopted Zoe in 2017, I had always heard that pugs weren’t the most athletic dogs and could get tired due to their short noses. My Pug proved them wrong. Two steps ahead of me—literally and figuratively—Zoe leads our four-member group on a 5-mile hike up Overlook Mountain.

Although the rock is less rocky and gravelly than Kaaterskill Falls, the climb to the top of Overlook Mountain is much more difficult. We had to go up to get a steady climb, but the air and dense fog filled us with laughter and excitement. And this exciting idea does not hurt!
