Dexter the Dog’s epic journey into 2019 has officially begun! January and February were full of local dog day trips, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first pet weekend. Traveling with dogs is always more fun with friends, so I invited Dexter’s best friend, Levi, and his mom, Chris, to join us.

Cambridge, Ohio is located in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio in Guernsey County. With a population of around 13,000, this town would be a perfect destination for dogs.

Dog Friendly Minnesota Weekend Getaways

Our first stop was lunch at McKenna’s Market in downtown Cambridge. This dog friendly restaurant offered outside seating and in the hot sun we stayed warm and dry even in March! This family market is owned by the McKenna family who have been in the food and market business since the 1970s. The family renovated a century-old historic building that quickly became a gastronomic destination. McKenna’s Market is known for its delicious homemade breakfasts and salads, we knew we were in for an exceptional experience.

The menu was rich and offered a variety of food for everyone’s taste. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I ordered the chicken salad. Hot coffee for us and the dogs, they welcomed them with fresh water and treats for the dogs.

While we were drinking coffee, people approached us, talked and petted the dogs. They were a huge success and everyone was so lovely and sociable. McKenna’s door had people going in and out during our meal; they really have a growing business. When our food arrived, I quickly found out why. The food was amazing!

When I travel, I really try to order food that isn’t my usual food and I’m usually pretty happy with it. The Fiesta salad was the bomb! It was so fresh, colorful and full of flavor. My taste buds and tummy were very happy. Chris’s shrimp and fries looked hot and inviting. She said they were cooked to perfection.

Pet Friendly Vacations And Dog Travel Practicalities

After lunch I explored the inside of McKenna’s Market. It was filled with great snacks, fruits, sweets, gourmet cheeses, meats, artisanal and local foods, freshly ground coffee beans, aged juices, wines and more. I ordered a few of their famous submarines for dinner with a bag of fresh coffee.

We thought it would be fun to drive around town looking for fun and unusual sculptures, murals and local landmarks. We were not disappointed. Cambridge was the home of former astronaut and US senator John Glenn. Although we didn’t visit the John and Annie Glenn Museum with the dogs, we did find a historical marker for it in Ohio.

Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd rose to fame as cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy, who appeared on the big screen in the 1930s and 1940s, and on television in the 1950s, and has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of memorabilia displayed at various locations in Croatia. the historic center of Cambridge. It was fun to find a few exhibits.

Our tummies wanted something sweet, so we headed to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy’s Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been baking for over 80 years. This bakery sounded like the perfect place to get pastries.

When I entered, I was greeted by a warm smile and the sweet smell of fresh produce. There were so many delicious things to choose from! I was surrounded by fresh cookies, breads, cakes, cookies, brownies, doughnuts, pastries, sweets and more.

One of the owners, Patty, took me behind the scenes. I was shocked at how huge the bakery was. They had antique ovens and equipment that they had been using since the beginning of their store. I really enjoyed all the family and love for the bakery and their community. It was quite a pleasant experience.

Before I left, I ordered a rich chocolate muffin, a fresh donut, and some of their best-selling tea cookies. As my teeth sank into the decadent muffin, it was obvious that this muffin was made with love and fresh ingredients. The cookies were so sweet I almost didn’t want to eat them. But I’m glad I did; they were moist, with just the right amount of sweetness.

It’s time to call it quits and head to our dog home at Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center (click to read more about the home). After feeding the dogs, Chris and I were ready to dive into our subs from McKenna’s Market. I ordered the Roscoe Village Chicken Salad and Chris ordered the McKenna’s Favorite. Mckenna’s Favorite was loaded with capicola, salami, pepperoni and a blend of 4 Italian cheeses. My salad was simply fantastic. It had big chunks of chicken with a great sauce, not what you think of when you order a chicken salad sandwich. It was so unique and delicious.

Dog Friendly Weekend Getaways From Chicago

After a full day of exploring Cambridge, Ohio, it was time to stop and rest for the adventure ahead. Saturday will be a full day of hiking and digging in Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork. But sleep first!
