In the mid-1900s, travelers driving down the highways of the South and Midwest might have seen a shed roof or two that said “Visit the City.” A popular marketing campaign launched by Garnett and Frieda Carter to promote their attraction atop Georgia’s Lookout Mountain. The gardens opened to the public in May 1932, and over the next few years, more than 900 barn roofs in 19 states were declared Rock City.

In the late 1920s, the Carters began developing this large walking garden on their property. They collected more than 400 species of native plants and placed them on winding paths through the park’s unique rocks, such as the Eye of the Needle, Balancing Rock and Fat Man’s Squeeze. Today, tourists come from all over the world to admire the flora and natural features of this unique place.

Rock City is proud to be a pet-friendly destination where dogs, cats, goats, and parrots all visit!

Visit the Animal Rules of Rock City Gardens. Pets must be on a leash at all times. All pet waste must be collected and properly disposed of. Due to the narrow roads and steep stairs, pets are not allowed in the park on the Enchanted Trail and Café 7 Terrace (friendly for children and pets).

The total distance of the trail is only 3/4 mile, but there is so much to see that it could take anywhere from two to four hours to see it all.

The highlight of the park is the view of Lover’s Cliff, where on a clear day all seven continents are clearly visible. Here you’ll also find Café 7, which is pet-friendly, and the Court of 7 Flags, where you can see the flags of various countries.

Adventure enthusiasts can exit across the Swinging Long Suspension Bridge, a 180-foot-long suspension bridge that stretches across the blue sky. (If heights bother you, there’s also the shady Rock Bridge option.) If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s outdoor animal seating near the entrance to the Big Rock Grill for a regular fee.

While on Jekyll Island, put on a leash and take your dog with you to one of the pet-friendly locations: Driftwood Beach, Great Sand Dunes, and St. John’s Island. St. Andrews is a place that both you and Fido will love.​

Ocean View Beach Park on Jekyll Island is a year-round pet beach, as long as your pet is kept on a leash. Enjoy stunning views of the bay and enjoy the sandy beach.​

Dogs are also welcome at St. Simons Island, East Beach and Massengale Park. Please note that pets are allowed on these beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Dogs are allowed on the beach from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am but must be under the control of their owners.​

Your pet will love Frederick’s Dog Park, which has plenty of room for your furry friend to run and play with other dogs. Frederick Park is home to Alice Richards Street. Simmons Arboretum, Children’s Area, Gazebo, and – Space Alert! – Forest paths are suitable for walks.​

From there, head to Fort Frederick National Monument to take photos among the ancient ruins. You will be surprised to know that Fredericka in the 1740s was a very comfortable residence with about 500 residents. You can also order snacks, drinks and dog food (if you don’t bring your own) from South Brogan in St. Louis. We recommend trying their delicious burgers and fried seafood. Tortuga Jack’s on Jekyll Island is dog-friendly and delicious
