Durdle Door In Dorset Is Named Uk’s Most Dog Friendly Beach

Palm Bay Beach will be the closest year-round dog-friendly beach to Margate if you want to combine the two visits. When we first arrived in Palm Bay, it wasn’t immediately clear how you get from the highway to the beach, but once you find your way through the rocks, the beach is yours. There is plenty of sand on the beach to take a breath or, if there is one very happy dog we saw, to zoom up and down.

Street parking is free and there is a dog-friendly jet ski restaurant at the end of the beach.

About ten minutes’ walk along the coast between Margate and Broadstairs you will find Kingsgate Bay, famous for its white chalk cliffs, sea caves and the much-photographed Kingsgate Bay Sea Arch. The waves were still very high when we visited, so we couldn’t walk around the arch, but it was still a great beach to visit.

Unfortunately, there is no car park at Kingsgate Bay and access to the beach is limited. The only parking is at Captain Digby’s pub (dogs are only allowed in the beer garden). Apparently they’ll set you back £20 if you don’t eat there even once.

Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs, Named As One Of The Uk’s Best Dog Friendly Beaches

You can drive to the famous Joss Bay Surf Beach which has good parking and then walk to Kingsgate Bay approx. 15 minutes Please remember that dogs are only allowed on Joss Bay Beach itself before 10am and after 6pm from 1 May to 30 September.

Another great dog stop option en route is the Botany Bay Hotel, a 10-minute walk from Kingsgate Beach. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and there are also dog-friendly hotel rooms if you plan to stay overnight.

Last but certainly not least was Dumpton Gap, the closest beach to Broadstairs on our list – in fact you can walk to Broadstairs in 15 minutes from Dumpton Gap if you wanted to. Dumpton Gap was definitely our favorite surprise of the afternoon. Be sure to visit when the tide is out and you can walk along the beach with nothing but sand, sea and the stark white cliffs that accompany it, which is quite impressive.

Parking was convenient with plenty of street parking available at the beach entrance. Although not open when we visited, Sam’s Cafe at the entrance to the sandy beach is known for its hospitality of people and puppies.

Dog Friendly Beaches In Kent To Visit With Your Dog

As we visited recently, not much was open in Margate and Broadstairs due to lockdown, so a dog-friendly city guide should be a future topic. However, here are two important dog items to note if you’re in the area…

Old Town Margate is home to one of our favorite children’s accessories brands Hiro + Wolf and their sister brand Artisans & Adventures. Renowned for their colorful, ethical items and beautiful handmade artwork, a visit to Margate with your four-legged friend wouldn’t be complete without checking out Hiro + Wolf. Brand names Hiro and Wolfie will give you a warm welcome if you do, and in Wolfie’s case, you’ll make a friend for life if you bring him treats.

A visit to the beach wouldn’t be the same without ice cream. Luckily at Morelli’s Gelato on Broadstairs beach you can find people with the dog version, and the second version is delicious considering how quickly it was eaten. Morelli’s Gelato is also usually dog-friendly inside, but during the Covid-19 restrictions, you can get your Morelli’s fix (along with other dogs and people).

With dog friendly beaches and dog ice cream off the list, we ended the day so happy we decided to check out this little corner of the Kent coast. As South Londoners, while the dog-friendly beaches in Kent may not be as close to us as the dog-friendly beaches in West Sussex, they are well worth a visit.
