The 12 Best Hotels In Carmel By The Sea 2024

Carmel-by-the-Sea, a beautiful beach town on the California coast, consistently ranks as one of the state’s most dog-friendly small towns and one of California’s prettiest winter getaways. If you’re wondering where to take your curious pup to avoid the 4th of July fireworks, head to Carmel.

The drive from San Francisco to Carmel takes 2-3 hours and is one of the best drives from San Francisco. I highly recommend taking Coastal Highway 1/Cabrillo to enjoy some scenic stops between San Francisco and Carmel.

The Big Narrows is the gateway to one of California’s most scenic road trips, a popular 17-mile route between Carmel and Monterey that you can take (with or without a dog) along Highway 1 (the Pacific Coast Highway). No wonder this Northern California beach town is a super romantic Northern California getaway!

This dog-friendly city has dog-friendly hotels, inns and B&Bs. There you can have fun with your dog. However, it is also a very popular dog-friendly destination, meaning most places are booked up in advance most times of the year.

Best Hotels In Carmel — This Life Of Travel

Additionally, non-hotels offer the same amenities (wifi, parking, pool, close to the beach), and many have a limited number of dog-friendly rooms. Here are some things to keep in mind before booking a dog-friendly hotel in Carmel:

Carmel includes both Carmel by the Sea, which is located on the coast near the Pacific Ocean, and Carmel Valley further inland and to the east. Although Carmel Valley is known for its farms and wineries, the dog-friendly options compared to Carmel-by-the-Sea are very limited and mostly consist of luxury hotels and resorts. Plus, it’s really hot here in the summer, which is no fun for your dog!

Also, downtown Carmel (where all the action happens) is near Carmel Beach, a popular dog-friendly California beach that will charm you with its soft sand and azure blue waters. Many Carmel hotels accept dogs within a few blocks of the beach; And the pleasant weather and access to a charming downtown with lovely patios and boutiques make Carmel-by-the-Sea a great place to live with your dog.

Carmel is one of the best places to stay with dogs in Northern California, but unfortunately it is one of the most expensive places in California due to its popularity. As a haven for dogs, especially on the 4th of July (fireworks are prohibited in Carmel), dog parents usually come to Carmel from the Bay Area and stay at least for the weekend.

In Carmel by the Sea, you won’t find cheap dog-friendly motel chains like Motel 6 or La Quinta. All the hotels in downtown Carmel range from relatively budget inns to outright boutique and luxury properties – none of them as “high budget” as the Motel 6.

I’ve pointed out some relatively inexpensive dog-friendly options in Carmel, but understand that they sell out quickly (so if you plan to visit, book your stay soon). In addition, most hotels charge extra for pets, which adds to the base price.

If you’re visiting Carmel on a budget, the best way to find dog-friendly accommodations in Carmel is to stay in nearby Monterey, visit in the off-season (any time except summer) and during the week Monday through Thursday. (Weekends are crowded year-round) or take a day trip from San Francisco to Carmel (it’s a 2.5 hour drive). All these or plan at least 1-2 months in advance to get the best hotel options and prices.

Let’s face it, finding a good dog-friendly hotel in California is not always easy. Additionally, 3-4 star hotels charge higher bed charges per night. I’ve often found myself in this position when traveling across California with Babu, and dog-friendly Airbnbs always come to our rescue in places like Mendocino, Lodi, and Sonoma.

However, if you’re planning to stay in Carmel with your dog, booking a vacation rental really isn’t overkill (more on that later) unless you’re looking for somewhere secluded and luxurious.

Given the number of options you have in terms of dog-friendly hotels, inns, and B&Bs in downtown Carmel, which are often cheaper than the vacation rental options, I recommend sticking with the first option instead of looking for dog-friendly vacation rentals. in Carmel.

I have to answer this question because someone once made a nasty comment on my Instagram post published by Carmel Tourism (one of my little blog’s few moments of sun in the past). The idea is whether his pet iguana would be as welcome in Pet Carmel as the dogs. Obviously, I used the term “pet friendly” a little too loosely and not very inclusively. Since then, I have tried to mark all my walks with Babu as dog-friendly only.

In the same spirit of transparency, I want to clarify that this post is specifically for pet-friendly hotels in Carmel, where dogs are definitely welcome. Their policies definitely vary when it comes to other pets, with some hotels making it very clear that they don’t allow cats (sorry, cat parents!).

Other hotels may not have clear policies about allowing other pets on site, so if you have pets other than a dog, feel free to contact the hotel management before booking. I remember a hotel manager in Santa Cruz telling us that their hotel even allowed peacocks!

It goes without saying, but all pet-friendly hotels in Carmel have their own rules and guidelines for keeping pets on site. Please always comply with them. These include always leaving your pet unattended in your room, keeping your pet on a leash when eating in common areas, and cleaning up after your pet when using public areas in hotels. Please don’t be a careless pet parent who spoils it for all of us, and follow all the rules diligently!

In this guide I tried to present everything as clearly as possible, based on the information I gathered while staying at the hotel, from the website or by calling the hotel. However, the hotel’s pet policy is constantly changing, so it is your responsibility to call and confirm your reservation before booking.

Now that we have the fine print out of the way, here are some relatively inexpensive dog-friendly options in Carmel. Nightly rates range from less than $100 to less than $200 per night (pet fees may apply).
