From campgrounds to holiday apartments and beach houses, here are some of our favorite places to stay for Great Danes in South East QLD. Living in Brisbane during Covid restrictions and border closures is an opportunity for us to travel more locally. And local travel means our Great Dane Pickle is always included in our travel plans. on me

My name is Sasha, Great Dane mother and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, I wouldn’t go more than a few months without an international vacation. But times have changed and in recent years we have done many local trips with Great Dane Pickle, particularly in South East Queensland. Sadly, Pickle passed away last year. But we recently welcomed a Great Dane puppy, Pumpkin, into our family. He’s following in Pickle’s footsteps and will join us on many adventures.

Pet Friendly Adventures On The Sunshine Coast

So I thought I’d share some of my favorite dog-friendly places in South East QLD, including links to activities and accommodation.

But before we go any further, if you’ve never traveled with your dog and don’t know where to start, check out my blog.

There are many dog-friendly campsites in Australia, and Hip Camp is a great place to start. You can enter the number of pets in your search and the results will only show pet-friendly options.

One of my favorite places for dogs is Gordon Country in the Gombura Valley. Located in the Cunningham Gap between Aratula and Warwick, just 2 hours from Brisbane. We have camped there countless times and started going there (before Pickle’s time) when it was just a cattle farm with no facilities. This has changed a lot over the years and they now have facilities, glamping sites and chalets.

Although the wilderness and campground area is dog friendly, they do not allow dogs inside the cabins (only in the fenced yard and porch). We have never stayed in cabins because of this. If you’re on school holidays or public holidays, you’ll probably have a place to yourself along the river. However, you need a 4×4 to benefit from the best campsites. Access to Gordon Country is via a dirt road and there are sites near the entrance and office that are accessible without a 4×4.

Dogs can be held off leash which is great. But be careful because there are cows and donkeys roaming freely on the property. We like to go there to relax around the campfire, but are there a lot of 4x4s and hiking trails? If the cold doesn’t bother you you can swim in the river, and if you go in winter take all your warm clothes, it’s very cold!

There are many different camping areas on North Stradbroke Island. The rules regarding dogs seem to be constantly changing, so it’s best to check the Stradbroke Island website for the latest information on dog-friendly camping areas and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cleveland. There is public transport on Stradbroke Island, but if you are taking your dog I recommend taking your car on the ferry. Keep in mind that the dog must be muzzled to get out of the car on the ferry. There are also dog friendly holiday homes on Stradbroke Island, see below for details.

We stayed in a stunning 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment (Alex’s perfect beach mat) at Alexandra Headland, just north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is on the second floor and there are stairs to access the apartment. However, it has a spacious terrace with a wonderful view, so you don’t feel like you’re in an apartment. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on furniture or in the shared pool.

The Best Queensland Island For Camping With Your Dog And More Dog Friendly Islands

It’s a short walk from the Headland and Mooloolaba. Mooloolaba has many dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating along the esplanade, as well as a sunset market every 1.

Mooloolaba beach does not accept dogs. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog friendly and a dog friendly beach is a short drive away.

Noosa Avalon Cottages is located on 30 acres of land 5 minutes from Pomona town and approximately 30 minutes from Noosa. There are 5 detached houses on this property ranging from 1 bedroom cottages to 3 bedroom farmhouses. They are all dog friendly and allow dogs inside. We stayed at Kangaroo Lodge, which has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The chalet is beautiful, has a lovely lounge with a great view and a large spa. The bed is small (double), but I would still recommend it for a nice quiet weekend.

Some chalets have safe terraces for your dog. The kangaroo hut has a fenced yard, but the fence is to keep the cows away from the dogs. It was great for our Great Dane. An ideal property for walks, with native gardens and lots of wildlife and birds, as well as free-roaming cows, so you’ll need to keep your dog on a lead.

The 15 Best Dog Friendly Hotels In Australia For 2024

Pomona is a small country town with several restaurants, cafes and an IGA supermarket. There is a local market at Stan Topper Park on Saturday mornings, which is dog friendly. They have lots of local crafts/handmade items as well as food stalls.

Toowoomba is Queensland’s largest inland city and is known as the Garden City. Many people come in spring for the spectacular Carnival of Flowers. It is a very beautiful city with many parks and gardens to discover.

We have been to Toowoomba several times. However, my favorite place is the Cozy Cat Cottage in Toowoomba town. The 3 bedroom cottage is a super cute renovated Queenslander. It is one of three original workers’ houses listed on the heritage line. This listed character cottage retains all the details and atmosphere of its heritage charm, but has been renovated to offer modern facilities. On the ground floor there are 2 queen-size bedrooms and a mezzanine with 2 single beds suitable for children. It includes 1 bathroom and a large bathroom, an electric fireplace in the living room and a kennel on the back porch suitable for small/medium sized dogs. The yard is completely fenced, although there are steps between the back deck and the yard.

Dogs are allowed inside the chalet, not in the carpeted bedrooms or on the sofa. The bathroom and kitchen are very well equipped and there are even dog cookies when we arrive! The hosts Janice and Michael were lovely. We will definitely return.

Mooloolaba Pet Friendly Holiday Rentals

Mudjimba is a small, quiet beachside suburb on the Sunshine Coast, close to the Sunshine Coast Airport. There is a beautiful park on the esplanade that leads to Mudjimba beach, which is dog friendly. North Shore Dog Beach, just south of Mudjimba in Twin Waters, is considered one of the best off-leash dog beaches on the Sunshine Coast.

Mudjimba Holiday Rentals has a number of pet friendly accommodation options, and Kirsty was wonderful. We stayed in a beautiful 4 bedroom house on the esplanade across from the park. We went with our family and had 2 dogs with us (we are Great Danes and members of the big dog family). Dogs are allowed inside, not on furniture.

On the esplanade is a fine Italian restaurant and café with a dog-friendly outdoor seating area.

If you have a boat or love the ocean, Hervey Bay is a must! We went with friends to stay at “The Sandpiper”, a beautiful 4 bedroom house in Craignish, just 10 minutes north of the center of Hervey Bay. Craignish is a quiet residential area, but it was perfect for us because there is a large yard for the kids and puppies, and plenty of space to park the boat. The house has everything you need, including a
