Best Dog Friendly Trails Acadia National Park – If you’re looking for dog-friendly hikes in Acadia National Park, I’ve got you covered! You have so many beautiful trails to explore! In addition to walking, you can spend time in Bar Harbor for food, drink and shopping. I went the first week of October and the fall foliage was almost at its peak, so it was beautiful! In my opinion, the best time to hike in Acadia is fall. Temperatures hovered around 40 degrees in the morning, in the low 60s in the afternoon, then dropped into the 30s and 40s at night.
It was a great experience and it was great to see my Siberian Husky Gatsby enjoying all the trails (and the Maine lobsters too). Here’s what you need to know if you’re visiting Acadia National Park with your pup.

I wanted a real camping experience, but I knew I couldn’t live without a shower and toilet. So we decided to have some fun with the Under Canvas Acadia. I’m so glad we chose to stay here because it’s dog friendly! Your dog can go anywhere. At Under Canvas Acadia, you can spend time in nature with modern luxury. It is also 35 minutes from Acadia National Park.

There are many safari-style canvas tents with private bathrooms. Each tent features king-size beds, West Elm furniture, wood-burning stoves, and organic plant-based bath amenities! In my opinion, after a long day of hiking, there is nothing better than a nice hot shower in my tent. The only thing is that you have to turn it down to get hot water when you shower. And there is no temperature control. The temperature in our tent was only in the mid 30’s and the hot water was not very hot! Each tent has USB batteries to charge your phone.
We enjoyed our meals here so much that we ate breakfast and dinner at the camp cafe every day. They offer seasonal and local produce, hot breakfasts, charcuterie boards, fresh salads, fresh seafood, casual dinners and wine. You also have coffee, tea and hot chocolate!
After the hikes, we returned to camp and relaxed in the indoor lounge or outside by the fire listening to live music. If you like board games, there are plenty to choose from.
What I really like about Under Canvas Acadia Campground is its private beach. Walking here at sunrise and sunset with Gatsby and my husband felt so peaceful. Gatsby and I saw the sky full of stars for the first time together.
Visiting Acadia National Park
Located in the woods of Mount Desert Island, Terramor Outdoor Resort is a little closer to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park than Under Canvas. If you want all the modern luxuries like showers and hot water, electricity and Wi-Fi in your tent, then Terramore is right for you.
Acadia National Park is one of the few national parks that allows dogs. Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet. There are a few places that are not allowed: steps, public waterways, Sand Beach or Echo Lake (high season) and Acadia Wildlife Gardens.
ADVISORY Your dogs may want to swim or drink from lakes and ponds, but this is the public water supply for Maine residents, so stay away!

Pup’s Trip To Adirondacks And Acadia National Park
After parking at the Jordan Pond House, you’ll enjoy a 3.5-mile hike on the trail around Jordan Lake. The water was calm and crystal clear! Your pup will want to drink here, so keep them away as the pond provides public drinking water. Beginning on the east side of the trail, it begins as a leisurely stroll over compact terrain to the beach area at the north end of the pond. From there, the road turns to stone and ends with a one-kilometer-high boardwalk. After the tour, you can visit the Jordan Pond House restaurant. We wanted to eat here but when we got there it was full. We will have to come back here on our next visit!
The Ocean Trail begins at the Sand Beach parking lot on Park Loop Road. Park here for the 2.2-mile drive along the rocky Atlantic coast between Sand Beach and Otter Point. Along the way, you’ll pass famous landmarks like Sand Beach, Thunder Pit, Monument Cove, and Otter Cliff.
Sandy Beach – If you take the path to the beach, watch out for the snakes near the stairs! We met a few times! From May 15 to September 15, dogs are not allowed on the beach. Also, we didn’t see any signs requiring dogs to be on a leash, so you may see some dogs running off leash. If you know your puppy doesn’t do well in this situation, be careful.
Thunder Pit – This famous site is an entrance carved through the rocky ledges of Acadia National Park. If you go here, go 1-2 hours before high tide. Then the waves crash against this inlet and make a thunderous sound!
Acadia National Park Easy Hikes: 12 Best For Families
Everyone goes to Cadillac Mountain for the morning sun. Mount Desert is the highest peak on the island. CONSULTING During the tourist season, advance reservations are required to climb to the top of Cadillac Mountain. To book tickets for a specific time slot, visit therecreation.govsite. To get to Cadillac Mountain, enter the park at the Cadillac Mountain entrance and head south on Park Loop Road. From there, take Cadillac Summit Road 3.5 miles to the upper parking lot.
Here you will find the most photographed lighthouse in Maine. The actual lighthouse is fenced off, but you can climb up to the lighthouse and take a short walk to the observation deck to see the old lighthouse along the shoreline.
CONSULTING Parking is tight here, so expect long lines. You wait in your car for a while.
Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island, adjacent to Acadia National Park. You’ll find many quaint restaurants and local shops selling Maine items and souvenirs to take home. I received a scented Maine embroidered pillow filled with Maine balsam fir.

If you’re a fan of lobster or seafood in general, head to the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. The lobsters here beat those in downtown Bar Harbor. They were the freshest and tastiest lobsters ever! The steamers, clams, potato salad and blueberry pie were also to die for. Just ask Gatsby; Definitely agree!
Hiking in Acadia National Park is an amazing experience to share with your dog. I’ll never forget the day I saw Gatsby’s eyes when we reached the tracks. He immersed himself in nature, smelling all the fresh scents of pine and balsam fir in the forests and listening to the waves crashing against the shoreline. He gladly left his footprints in Acadia with one foot at a time.
