Dog Friendly Hiking Trails In Southern California You Can Visit (2024 Guide)
I recently traveled to LA with my boyfriend and his mini Goldendoodle. We covered a lot, from Rancho Palos Verdes to Santa Monica. This list contains some of my favorites. The puppies liked it as much as we did and we can all recommend it.

At the top of our list of the best dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles is Rancho Palos Verdes in the Portuguese Arch Preserve. Four-legged friends are allowed here and it’s a popular spot for hiking and views of the Pacific Ocean.
Located southeast of Del Cerro Park, the Portuguese Arch Preserve is a 399-acre nature reserve on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Established in 2005, it is the largest single reserve within the 1,400-acre Palos Verdes Nature Reserve. It is famous for its steep hills, dramatic gorges and rocky cliffs.
The wide paths in the Portuguese Arches are open to hikers, cyclists, horse riders and dog walkers. It’s a great place to get out and enjoy the Southern California scenery.

There are many routes to choose from, varying in length and difficulty. Remember that no matter where you go, you have to make sure the stock price goes down.
My friend, his dog and I love the loop that starts at the Burma Trail. It is the main street from the entrance on Crenshaw Blvd. The views of the coast and Catalina Island are spectacular from here.
The hike takes a total of 2 hours. It’s a great way to get outside while enjoying some of the best views in the area. Although the route was moderately challenging, it wasn’t too steep for our taste. Overall we had fun.

Dog Friendly Spots In San Clemente
Our list of the best dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles includes San Vicente Mountain Park. From the famous Mulholland Drive to the old Nike Missile Station, everything has its way out. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it is a destination for outdoor recreation.
San Vicente Mountain Park is located west of Highway 405 and east of the Santa Monica Mountains above the Encino Reservoir. The 10.2 hectare site is rich in history and is worth exploring on local walks.
This sequential hike begins on Mulholland Drive and is approximately 2 miles long. There is a wide dirt road with a slight slope to the former army reserve and not the paved part of the road. A relatively easy hike with flat terrain, great views and a few meters of elevation gain.
The hike takes about an hour. If you and your dog are in good shape, you can do it faster. If you want to spend some time exploring the missile site (it’s worth it), you might want to consider that too.

There are many other dog-friendly trails outside of Missile Park. So if you want to go on a longer hike, you can definitely take one. There are many options from Canyonback Trail to West Mandeville Fire Trail to Mulholland Drive.

Next on my list of dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles is the Hollywood Hills. This moderate hike is a great option if you and your canine partner want to take a trip to Griffith Park.
Located in the East Santa Monica Mountains, Griffith Park encompasses 4,210 acres of natural and scenic land. It is one of the largest city parks in the United States with urban desert areas and is a popular place for walking in LA.

Last but not least, the wide-angle lens offers breathtaking views of LA, Century City, Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign and other Los Angeles landmarks.
My friend, his dog and I were walking outside in the Hollywood Hills. After parking at the Merry Go Round Lot, we took Fern Canyon Road to Upper Beacon Road, then turned right and continued on Vista Del Valle Drive with breathtaking views. From there we took the Hogback Trail to Dante’s View.
The climb took a total of 2.5 hours. We left at 9:30am on a hot morning and wanted an early start. However, our only regret is the beauty of the trail and the view is worth the climb.

Dog Friendly Hikes In Los Angeles
Next on my list of dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles is the West Mandeville Fire Trail in Mandeville Canyon. This moderate hike around Brentwood and Santa Monica is ideal if you’re looking for wide trails.
The 3.64-mile Mountain Fire Trail on the eastern edge of Topanga State Park offers great opportunities to enjoy the scenery along the canyon with your dog. At the top it connects to Mulholland Drive and San Vicente Park.
Like many on my list, there is plenty of sun along the way. If it’s hot outside, it’s better to come earlier or later.
My friend, his dog and I hiked the Mandeville Grand Canyon. After parking on Westridge Road, we followed the fire road up the hill. There were lots of quick turns and stairs to turn around and we had a great time making our way around the place on our own.
