I welcome every opportunity to enjoy the holidays with Maggie and love to share stories, photos and videos of our adventures. Before you start making your to-do list, ask yourself if your pet will enjoy the trip. If your dog is not a fan of new places and novelties, he may prefer to stay at home with someone who loves him, in the comfort of his own home. We want you both to have fun, and if your pet doesn’t enjoy the trip, neither of you will.

– Check the weather where you are traveling. I live in sunny Los Angeles, but just a few hours away in the desert the temperatures can drop dramatically. Small dogs can get cold, so always wear a coat or blanket if possible.

Before the recent changes made by the US Department of Transportation, Teddy flew in to be my emotional support animal. DOT now defines a “service animal as a dog individually trained to perform work or tasks for a person with a disability,” and ESA no longer recognizes service animals. First, check the airline’s pet policy to see if your dog meets its guidelines and can fly with you. Factors to consider include the dog’s size, weight and breed. Some airlines do not accept pit bulls or brachycephalic breeds such as pugs, French bulldogs or shih tsus. Some airlines, like JetBlue, have a weight limit of 20 pounds. American Airlines, Delta and United do not have weight limits, but Delta’s pet policy states: “Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in the cabin and must fit under the seat.”
Once you have booked your flight, you will need to call the airline to make a reservation for your dog to travel with you in the cabin. Most airlines have a limited number of pet reservations per flight, so it’s best to call ahead. You only pay after checking in at the counter on the day of your flight.
Tip: Check-in is not possible 24 hours before the flight date and you must check-in at the counter.
Purchase an airline pet policy that meets the airline’s policy requirements. Most airlines offer hard or soft sided seats that fit perfectly under the seat. Use a tape measure to make sure your pet is the right size. While I’ve tried many great pet carriers, my favorite is an airline certified pet carrier with Sherpa lining for comfort that I found here on Amazon. Other great options include the Sleepypod Air Integrated Fat Rack and the Mr. Soft peanut butter carrier.
