New England is known for its quaint towns, beautiful nature and rich history. Consisting of six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, each has its own culture and claim to fame. From mountain tops to crushing ocean beaches, I’m excited to share some of my favorite adventures in dog-friendly New England!
Best Dog Friendly Towns In New England
Halibut Point State Park is a coastal park with a granite quarry, nearly three miles of trails and expansive views. There is also a visitor center and a tower that looks like a lighthouse on the ground.
The Fastest Growing Dog Friendly Cities
Halibut Point is one of our favorite destinations in Massachusetts. The path starts in the forest before reaching the tower and entering the quarry. We never missed the opportunity to take photos in the tower before appreciating the unusual geological features of the quarry.
The path goes around the mine and provides many opportunities to stand on the rocky lens and admire the panoramic view.
As the trails go down to the beach, the rocks can be challenging for those with mobility problems. But for dogs, they provide great opportunities to jump rocks, explore tide pools and lie down to appreciate the therapeutic sound of crashing waves.

Dog Friendly Things To Do In Bath
One of New England’s most recognizable landmarks is the Covered Bridge. Originally made to protect the deck from harsh New England winters, the covered bridge has a unique style.
Even if you haven’t thought of adding covered bridges to your itinerary, they are absolutely a must-do when visiting New England! And almost every bridge is completely pet-friendly!
Some of our indoor bridge adventures are simple – royal pauses and some time to breathe new life. Others are involved in hiking, or picnic on the sand or rocks under the bridge.
If you want to appreciate a quintessential New England landmark and get a photo of your dog, this is definitely your place!
Top Dog Friendly Things To Do In New England
The White Mountains cover about a quarter of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine. With 48 peaks over 4,000 feet, they are popular for skiing, hiking and ATVing.
For a short visit to the White Mountains, take the Concamangus Highway. Some of the best spots along the way are Rocky Gorge, Lincoln Woods and Sabbath Falls.
You will find endless hiking trails, from easy to strenuous. Many even include lakes, waterfalls and running water. Some of my favorites are Arthosa Falls, Hagen Falls Trail, Ripley Falls, Ammonsock Trail and Lone Lake. And almost every hike in the White Mountains is pet-friendly!
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, waterfall hunter or lover of the perfect scenery, this is the place for you!
Best Small Town In America To Visit
Cape Cod is a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean near the southeast corner of Massachusetts. It is a summer destination famous for its laid-back lifestyle, with tourists flocking to its beaches, lighthouse, swimming pools, village, seafood shacks and dockside restaurants.
We love Cape Cod best in the off-season, when it’s one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. And much less crowded! However, you will find many places that are pet-friendly all year round. Especially in Provincetown, which is at the tip of the peninsula.
Our Cape Cod memories include beaches, lighthouses and Nickerson State Park. But we also visited the garden, the windmill, and even went shopping with the dog.
Although there are endless beaches to choose from, our favorite is Town Neck Beach with its gorgeous boardwalk, and Cahoon Kerung Beach which requires a long walk down a dune. One aspect of Cape Cod that I love is the sand, a spectacular and unusual site in New England.
Best Places To Camp: Top 10 In New England
Gillette Castle is our favorite destination in Connecticut. This land was once the estate of William Gillette, a famous actor in the early 19th century. The park, later purchased by the state of Connecticut, now surrounds the famous Gillette Castle and has a visitor center, museum, hiking trails and picnic areas. There are even live theater shows and walking tours available for visitors!
We love to hike the trails, take in the views of the Connecticut River, cross the pond and find the Country Bridge.
In addition to enjoying the view, we like to walk around the outside of the castle. The intricate details and spectacular architecture of this field stone structure certainly does not disappoint. Although pets cannot enter the buildings, it seems that every time we visit the park, we get a new feature to admire.
So if you are a fan of the Middle Ages, like river views, or like hiking in the forest, this is definitely your place!
Autumn In New England Is Spectacular: Where To Go
Wolf’s Neck Woods National Park covers approximately 250 acres on a peninsula between Casco Bay and the Arsaiket River. It contains a variety of ecosystems and is known for the native grouse that nest on Goggins Island. The park is open year-round, and is popular for bird watching, hiking, educational programs and picnicking.
Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is a recent addition to our list of dog-friendly things to do in New England. With miles of trails, trees in the trees, and sparkling water views, we love the variety of terrain.
Some trails provide the opportunity to get closer to the water, whether through a sandy beach, a stairwell or jagged rocks. But my favorite thing about Wolfe’s Neck Woods is the view of Casco Bay from high above the beach.
The dramatic color of the water, almost tropical in places, contrasts with the texture of the rocks and creates a spectacular scene.
New England Road Trip: Where To See The Most Spectacular Foliage This Fall
If you’re a geology buff, an avid bird watcher or rocky beach lover, this is definitely the place for you!
Dog Mountain is a 150-acre dog-friendly sanctuary on a mountaintop in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The property is owned by the talented artist, furniture maker, sculptor and writer, Stephen Hank.
Unfortunately, Huneck died only 61 years old. However, his vision continues with Dog Mountain’s dog chapel, art gallery and many pet-friendly trails, swimming pools. They even host dog-friendly events, including parties and concerts.
The Dog Chapel, dedicated to our fallen furry friends, is a place of healing for all those who have lost their furry friends. Photos and notes of departed pets cover the walls several layers deep. And every detail in the chapel is excellent, from the carving of the dog on the bench, through the stained glass window to the statue.

Another thing to love about Dog Mountain is the gallery, which contains artwork and many products created by Huneck. The best part about this gallery is that dogs can shop with you. All proceeds help keep Mountain Dogs in business, so be sure to support this wonderful place.
Finally, you won’t want to miss the trails, pools and other features throughout the property. The route is simple, but beautiful, especially in the autumn months. There is a beautiful swimming pool where canine friends often choose to play. And you will find dog statues in different places, dog carvings adoring fences and other special treasures scattered around. I can guarantee you have never seen anything like it!

Some of our lighthouse adventures include distant views. Others involve hiking to or around the park where one is located. And of course all the visits include dozens of photos to commemorate our journey with the amazing buildings.

We absolutely loved our visit to Acadia National Park – definitely one of the most beautiful and dog-friendly places in New England. The landscape is unique and spectacular, with trees emerging from the rocky shore and waves crashing dramatically against the rocks. And exploring at sunrise and sunset adds a magical touch to the spectacular scenery.
