Clearly something must be done. At first I wanted to save the risers and stairs, but they were in such bad shape that I ended up tearing them out and rebuilding them. I promise it wasn’t as hard as it sounds. All you have to do is pry out the old parts with a hammer, then cut new tacks and risers and nail them to the bases (wires). However, if you are looking for stair runners and how to install them, real stairs are in good condition, so just use them!

Anyway, I wanted softness for my stair treads, so I did some research on how to install stair treads, picked out the carpet I wanted to use, and bought it! Below I will share what I did and some things I will do differently the next time I take on this project.

Before you begin, measure the length of carpet you need. I used a tape measure and placed it under the nose of the top step, then carefully rolled up each step until I reached the bottom. A typical staircase will probably need two rugs, but always measure just in case!

To create a professional look, you must ensure that the edges of the runners are straight for the entire length of the stairs. To do this, measure the width of your stairs and subtract the width of your carpet runner from this number. Divide the remaining number in half to get the number of inches you want on each side of the runner. To keep it straight, measure the distance from each tread to the wall and mark with painter’s tape to guide the installation of the carpet.

Next, you cut a piece of hatch pad about 1 inch smaller than the runner and longer than the tread depth. Place a guide of painter’s tape on the pavement, about half an inch from the edge.

To begin installing the runner, place the top edge of the carpet scoop directly under the top step. Fill as close to the top as possible, spacing the brackets a few centimeters apart.

When looking for ways to install stair treads, you will see two styles: the wrap style and the waterfall style. To install the roll-up method, runners are stamped under each step and at the intersection where the maintenance of each riser meets the new run. The waterfall insert is attached only to the point where the bottom of the riser meets the back of the new run. Here I chose the waterfall style.

Two things I wish I hadn’t used were the reinforcing chisel (to smooth the seams on the carpet) and the long nose gun. I used an upholsterer I had, but the mounting angle was small, so my clamps were more visible than I wanted. I came up with a solution that I liked, but there weren’t two products I wanted to recommend!

If, like me, you approach the installation of stair treads with a waterfall installation, pull the carpets firmly and evenly and pull them into the bottom of each riser, then put additional pieces of carpet pad on the stairs and repeat, glued. All risers until you reach the end of the runner.

Cut a thick strip from the bottom of the first runner and the top of the second runner. Leave enough length for the runners already on the stairs to fit under the ends of the new runners.

Fold up the raw edges of the new runner and place them in place along the stair and riser seams. You may want more backbone than usual for this stitch.

When you get to the top of the stairs, cut the runner again, moving it down at least 2 inches, but still allowing you to reach the end of the last riser. Fold and glue the bottom part of the last riser.

I’ve always loved the look of stairs and it was the perfect solution to add interest to the stairs and cover any big holes I didn’t like. Installation is also very easy. Center the lugs and fasten them with a screw.

And with that, an ugly, unsightly corner of our house became a clean, beautiful basement family entryway that I worked hard to remodel. This room is the perfect entryway!

I moved some pictures from my trip out West a few years ago and moved them to the stair wall. I love them every time I walk down these stairs, and I think some wall art will make the stairs feel more homely and complete.

And to remind you how far this little corner has come, here’s a before and after page.

Stair Runners: Yes Or No?

Since the beginning of the year, we have been coming through the door. well… i cancel that. We took it down last year and had a contractor do the metal work and install the frames to fix the ceiling. But since the beginning of the year I have painted, trimmed, cleaned, crossed and painted a few more times. Yesterday I took the stairs and installed a DIY Stair Runner! Today I’m here to show you how to install a stairwell yourself! It’s much easier than you might expect. Your knees might hurt… It was worth it!

This is what our front door looked like when we first walked in! This house was a duplex when it was purchased and was divided by a wall. So if we merge the two images and remove the middle wall, that’s basically what we’ve done.

I also covered the door on the right because it goes into the master closet, but I removed all the bar space. I don’t understand what other people do! That’s exactly what I saw when I drew the picture.

How To Install A Stair Runner

This project is really easy and only took a few hours to put together. I did it alone, but there are some places where it would have been nice to have more hands.

For this installation I just used regular runners that I bought and assembled. It is not necessary to go shopping for long carpets. Doing it this way opens up a variety of options for a runner without spending a ton of money!

Let’s choose about real runners! Below are some of the options I considered (including the ones I chose).

The most important thing to consider when buying pattern runners. Can I match it again and again? It is possible to use a rug with a border, but matching will result in a lot of leftovers. I chose to extend the pattern to the end of the rug. This makes everything so much easier to organize!

The next thing to consider is the story. The stairs were hit. This is especially true if you have children and pets. In the end I chose an indoor/outdoor mat made of polypropylene. Another popular option for stairs is wool. Wool is known for its durability and is a great choice if you can’t find a pattern you like on indoor/outdoor rugs. I would definitely avoid the pasta. It will not withstand the constant ups and downs of your feet and will be very difficult to clean in place.

Finally, consider color options. I actually didn’t want too many bright colors because I have kids and pets to get a little dirty!

I have shared this process in my IG story if you find it easy to understand by watching the video. I saved it to my favorites so I can refer to it when I need it!
