Stair Runner Basement Ideas – One project I couldn’t wait to tackle last year was my ugly staircase. Here’s how we completed an easy DIY basement stair renovation and how to install an indoor carpet runner

Almost 2 years ago, this staircase renovation was on my wish list, but another project got cancelled.

So when we had the opportunity to renovate our basement, I was so excited to get rid of that ugly old fence and dirty carpet!

Carpet On Stairs: How It’s Done And Pros And Cons

This whole process is part of the One Room Challenge and we’re now in week seven, but this project is one of the main things to do for this basement renovation.

Here’s how we did this DIY basement stair remodel, and let me tell you, it’s not a difficult task. Just a lot of small steps.

The original plan was to use as much of the old ladder as possible to help keep costs down.

But that quickly changed and we had to go back to the drawing board and rework our original plan.

How To Install A Stair Runner

We don’t know if the builder installed these stairs or if the original owner who finished the basement did this shoddy work, but look at those cracks.

At least half an inch of space between the side of the stairs and the base, which is especially bad at the bottom of the stairs.

So our choice is to replace the stairs or work with the existing stairs. This can cause many problems.

We found the cheapest option for stair treads and decided it was worth the cost to replace them rather than worry about the headache of trying to fix all the problems.

With a quick sweep of the circular saw, Trent cut it in less than a minute.

We also had to remove the tread from the outside of the stairs as the new tread didn’t fit the old one.

This is the most difficult task as it requires some muscle. In the old houses they used nails for everything, and the nails were very long.

Since Trent had a hard time with those long nails, he worked in two stages. And no, I don’t mean the dance.

It is an easy way to check each hook and measure the height of the hooks to make sure they are completely level.

After doing a little research on some basement stair ideas, we learned that the best way to attach the base is to use deck screws.

It is advisable to first drill a hole using a sink drain. This makes it easier to fill the screw holes.

Trent also took the extra step of using some construction glue on the stairs to hold the base in place.

Stair Carpet Ideas: Elevate Your Home With These Runners

We decided to make this wider staircase that hangs on the wall because the previous owner cut it to cover it with carpet.

When Trent installed these stairs, I started painting the railing with the first coat of black paint.

I bought it locally at Brass Bear Antiques in Birmingham. But you can also find it online at Amazon.

Since we picked up affordable stairs from our local Townhouse, our plan was to use white paint and a gray carpet runner in the middle.

I start by seeding each site. I left the venue unpainted as it would have been carpeted.

After we installed the handrails, I finished the stairs and Trent started installing the iron balusters.

I have a whole blog post on installing iron railings if you want to learn more about how we do it.

After Trent installed the banister, I spent a few days painting the paths white. I let each coat of paint dry overnight to make sure

Also, white paint is a great choice for basement stairs if you use a carpet runner in the middle.

I think the best option for a rug runner is an outdoor rug I’ve found, but I’m worried about how it will feel underfoot.

So, to add a little cushion to every step, we put affordable carpet pads on every step.

The length wasn’t right for our stairs, so I ordered three to cover all the stairs.

To find out how much you need, take a seam tape measure and measure each step and foot board, don’t forget the seam allowance!

So, if you’ve ever wondered how to install indoor stair runners, here’s how.

We found that the top of the stairs is the best starting point for installing railings.

I have mentioned many times how much I love having air tools for our work area and it is a very worthwhile investment if you do a lot of home improvement.

When piecing together two rugs, it is best to cut the edges of the rug to create a seamless look.

It’s very easy to do with scissors and you can barely reach where the two rugs meet.

A waterfall is the easiest installation for your stairs. You attach the carpet to the riser and then let it fall over the edge of the stairs without any details.

However, I liked the different look of the curved nose, so we attached it to the stair landing, then wrapped it around the top of the stairs and stapled some under the stair landing to create a balustrade.

We went downstairs, but realized we had to start from the bottom to have a clean edge in the basement.

Next, we start at the bottom of the stairs with the edge of the woven carpet and walk back until we meet the stop.

The only problem is that you have to make sure the math doesn’t go to waste.

Use a pair of sharp scissors and they are very easy to cut. Just make sure you keep a clear line.

What To Know About Finishing Basement Stairs

What I love about crown staples is that they disappear under the carpet threads, becoming almost invisible.

So Trent took a crown stapler and stapled together at each step to create an even, clean look.

I love this new look and can’t wait to show you how it goes with the rest of the room.

This is the easiest way to solve this problem without having to completely remove the long boards that run along the wall.

Stair Runner Basement Ideas

My husband has been painting our small basement stairs for the past week or so. It looks so cute! When we moved in, it was carpeted and not very nice. We removed the carpet and painted the steps dark gray a few years ago, but the paint had faded and the steps themselves always needed attention (wood putty and sanding), and this time we decided to pay more attention give them more. .

I know a lot of you have messaged me saying you love the process photos, so here we go: our stairs before and in process.

We still have a lot of work to do on it and walls to paint, but it already makes me happy. Yes, we painted it white! It is fresh, light and very beautiful! It’s kind of a dark staircase, so we’re very happy with the new look.

Don’t worry about white skin or dogs. We are looking for the perfect stair runner! I prefer bare wood because it is so easy to clean! Do you remember our last nap? We love the forest. A quick swipe with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth, and we’re good to go.

But in the stairs and in this situation, natural wood was not an option for us, so we wanted to look at combining a bright white paint with a light textured rug so that it was less likely to slide up or down. on them. Some rugs can be a bit difficult to clean on the stairs, but we will do our best to choose rugs that are as easy as possible (but still super cute!).
