It was clear that something had to be done. I was hoping to salvage the risers and treads, but they were so bad that I decided to rip them out and rebuild them. I’m sure it’s not as difficult as it sounds – just hammer the old pieces, then cut the new treads and they go up and nail them to the supports (strings) – but if you You are looking for rails and how to install them. Your stairs are indeed beautiful stairs, use them as they are!

I still wanted the softness of the stairs, so I researched how to install the stairs, chose the carpet I wanted to use, and did it! Below I’ll share everything I did and a few things I’d do differently the next time I start this project.

Before starting, measure the length of the carpet you want. I used a tape measure and placed it under the toe of the top step and then carefully wrapped it around each step until it reached the bottom. You may need two rugs for a standard staircase, but always measure just in case!

To look professional, you’ll want to make sure the edges of your runner are smooth all the way down the stairs. To do this, measure the width of your stairs and subtract the width of the carpet from that number. Divide the remaining number by two. This is the number of centimeters you need on each side of your runner. To ensure alignment, measure the distance from the wall on each tread and mark it with painter’s tape to guide your carpet installation.

Next, cut a piece of carpet about an inch smaller than the width of your runner and slightly smaller than the width of the tread. Place it on the back so that it is about half an inch from the edge of your duct tape guide.

To begin installing the runner, place the top edge of your carpet runner against the bottom of your top step. Staple as close to the surface as possible, spacing the staples a few inches apart.

When you’re looking for a way to install a fence, you’ll see two different styles: trellis and cascading. In the installation method, the runner is stapled both at the bottom of each step and at the junction where the base of each tube meets the new tread. Cascade installation is only attached to the seams where the bottom of the pipe meets the back of the new cable. I decided to do it in waterfall style here.

Two things I wish I hadn’t used were the back chisel (for making sharp stitches in the carpet) and the long gun above. I used an upholstery stapler that I had and since the angle of the stapler was slightly different, my staples stood out more than I wanted. I found the answer I like, but these are two products I don’t have that I can recommend!

If you want to install the stairs using a waterfall like I do, lay your carpet tight and even and place it at the bottom of each riser, then repeat by pressing the carpet pieces to the legs and down. Every rise until you reach the end of your run.

Cut thick knots from the bottom of your first runner and the top of your second runner. Leave enough length on the runner already on the stairs to fit the end of the new runner.

Fold the wrong edge of the new runner down and place it in position along the spine with the increased seam. You may need more stitches than usual with this stitch.

When you get to the bottom of the stairs, cut the runner again so you can lower it a few inches and reach the end of the last step. Fold and label the last layer to preserve.

I’ve always loved the look of stairs and this was a great solution to both add interest to my stairs and cover the base holes I didn’t want to cover. They are also very easy to install. Place it on your rug and hook it.

How To Make A Diy Stair Runner

I have been working on the door since the beginning of the year. Well…then I’ll take it. We took it down last year and a contractor came in and did some plaster work to protect the roof. But since the beginning of the year, I have been engaged in painting, flooring, cleaning, cleaning, painting, etc. I am doing it. Yesterday I tackled the stairs and installed my DIY Stair Runner! And today I’m here to share with you how to install a stair rail yourself! It’s easier than I expected. My knees might hurt… but it was worth it!

This is what our entrance looked like on our first visit! When we bought this house, it was divided by a wall because it was a duplex. So if you put these two pictures together and remove the middle wall, that’s exactly what we did.

We also closed the door on the right side because it went into the main closet, but it took up all the space of the bar. I never understand what other people do! Here is a good view while painting.

How To Install A Stair Runner Without Power Tools

This project is really easy and only took a few hours to install. I did it myself, but there were a few places where it would have been nice to have an extra pair of hands.

For this setup I used regular runners that I bought and put together. You don’t have to buy a long carpet. Doing it this way also opens up a lot of options for the runner without spending a lot of money!

Let’s talk about choosing the right runner! Below I have collected a few options for you (including my own).

The most important thing to consider when buying a runner is fitness. Is it repeatable and comparable? You might go with a horizontal rug, but you’ll have plenty of leftovers to match. I went with something where the pattern continues all the way down the leg. This made organizing everything really easy!

The next thing to consider is the theme. The stairs are full of bumps. Especially if you have kids and pets. I ended up choosing an indoor/outdoor polypropylene rug. Another popular option for stairs is wool. Wool is well known for its durability and is a good choice if you find that you can’t find the pattern you want in an indoor/outdoor rug. I stay away from cotton, it won’t stand up to the ups and downs of traffic and will be difficult to clean in place.

Last but not least, consider your color choice. I didn’t want anything too simple because I actually have kids and pets so it might get a little messy!

If watching the video makes it easier for you to understand, I shared the process on my IG story. I’ve saved it to my highlights section so you can come back to it if you need to!
