We made it! We installed a DIY railing on the stairs in our house It’s rare that I do a project these days, but here we live in the future with stairs. When I first had the idea to add a runner to our bare wood stairs, Andy freaked out and remembered all the carpets we had torn up on the stairs as soon as he got the keys to our house ( see list on the first floor). (photo here) and he reminded me that our feet are wonderfully clean Unfinished wood siding is a special feature in our home and we appreciate it So I didn’t take covering the stairs lightly

We decided to add a runner to improve stair safety for our senior Corgis, seniors and family. Penelope, our 11 year old corgi, suffers from arthritis and in recent months she has had trouble going up and down stairs. By the way, I love carpets. I found that adding a little texture and warmth to the stairs really made our entryway complete

Our ladder seems to be wearing a beautiful sweater. By the way, it’s like a scarf, but it’s called a sweater. It’s like a warm hug

We chose to use mats for our stairs instead of ordering something custom made. We went black with an indoor/outdoor rug by Annie Selke Dash and Albert Samson. Choosing to use ready-made runners instead of a custom runner opens up different options and can be more expensive, but it means you have to stitch the carpet together and then have seams holding the carpet together.

When our floors were repaired, so were our legs, but the risers were left intact Shows the wear and tear to be expected in a nearly 90 year old home You can see evidence of previous carpet installations and the scratches and dents of years of use We would have painted the risers to hide them all (and they look great painted black), but we loved the look of all the wood stairs.

I love our thin and simple spindle. Ok, ready? Here’s what we used and how we did it

There are some great tutorials out there and we used a combination of the three. We focused on the tutorials from Yellow Brick House, took the gun used by Young House Love, and got tips on joining rugs from Annie Selke’s Runner Installation Guide. If you need to run into a corner, see how to do it with the Deuce Cities Chicken Coop.

First, measure your stairs to see how much area you need to cover (and how many runners you need to purchase). Measure your legs, nose and riser and multiply the number of steps you took We need three 8′ runners to cover our steps and a little extra Use the x foot measurement to determine how much padding you need

Once you have gathered all the materials, you should get started. From start to finish, we spent about a day preparing with free breaks for shows, food, refreshments and photos.

Before you start moving, you will need to do some prep work to make sure your carpet is installed correctly. The number you get is the distance you want to leave on either side of the runner, making sure it’s centered. You can use painter’s tape to mark a side to follow along the path

Then measure the center of the post and make a small mark in the center. This will help center the tip of the carpet

Cut the mat/pad into rectangles just less than the depth of your feet (and the width of your runner if using a mat wider than your runner). Mark the center of the rectangle with the mark you made on the cake stand to help you center it exactly

We use a 1/4″ thick paint mat with a rubber grip on one side. I chose this as an extra measure to hold the guides in place. We placed 3 strips of carpet tape (at each end and in the center ) on the matte side of the mat and then place them in the center of the stairs.

Are you ready to leave! I used John and Sherry’s trick of using a plug before inserting it into the main gun. This helps hide the staples in the dark areas of the runner Westerly Marash Luxury Collection 25′ Stair Runner Rugs Stair Carpet Runner With 336,000 Points Of Fabric Per Square Meter, Black: Home & Kitchen

We started by attaching the shoe under the toe of the tread and inserting the clip into the riser trim. Since the ends of the carpet are large, you can clearly see where the staples go. It’s visible in the photo, but it’s not something I can see

We continued by adding staples to the bottom of each spike and then to the bottom of each riser. It is important to use a carpet tool to position the runner in the corner where the riser and tread meet.

Here is the complete 8′ guide installed. Next it’s time to add the second guide

To join the rug, you need to align the end of one rug with the leading edge of the next. Our first runner didn’t overlap enough, so I ripped the last seam with a seam ripper.

We put the second runner on top of the first runner’s end cap (I’m just making up words here) tight and clamped to the back of the tread. We followed Annie Selke’s tutorial and added mats to the legs instead of the risers. I like this method (instead of adding a rug to the risers) because it’s less visible when you step away and take the stairs.

We repeated this process to add the third row. When we got to the end of the last step, there was only a small piece of carpet left. I used scissors to cut the carpet, leaving about two inches.

She woke up and did her favorite steps with our runner Penelope When I first showed the patterns for this rug on my Instagram story, many kind people commented that the horizontal lines were horrible. They warned me that it wouldn’t be linear and that it would drive me crazy. I really changed my mind and thought about how much I wanted to be perfect (usually I just want to be perfect). But I’m a perfectionist and stubborn. , so I ordered it.

When we set up the runners, I noticed that we couldn’t keep the lines perfectly straight or the same pattern on each step. And I’m fine with that. I liked it immediately. Maybe I wake up at four in the morning, worried that I’ve made a big mistake, maybe I can’t sleep for two hours. But when I got up and looked at it again, I was happy. The pattern itself is organic and I think the imperfection matches the state of the stairs we love.

Evidence of Penelope’s newfound confidence is running at high speed up the stairs to blow on the lawnmower.

Now that the runner is in, I’m excited to finish the entry. I built my stairs last summer and haven’t documented it much, but I’ve done it often. Get questions about stair rails and how difficult they are to install I dug out some photos from my archives and decided to put together a little tutorial for you It was a very simple DIY project and I completed the whole thing in a day and a half.

My stairs run at an angle so I had to sew one of my runners to get around the landing, I’ll go over how to do this too. I was a little worried that the simulation wouldn’t come in or crashed, but it’s been over a year and the simulation is holding up well!
