One of the disadvantages of hardwood is that their smooth surface can be slippery, especially on stairs.

Stairway Remodel Part 1: Ripping Out Old Carpet And Finding Pressboard/plywood

The best way to make hardwood stairs smoother is to increase traction by installing carpet, non-slip treads, or applying an anti-slip coating to the surface of each step. All three of these methods make the surface of each step harder, increase traction and significantly reduce the risk of slipping.

In addition to using one of these methods to increase traction, I recommend that your stairs and handrails comply with today’s residential building codes.

Each step should not exceed 7 ¾ inches. Each step must be at least 10 inches deep and at least 36 inches wide. Your handrails should be 34-38 inches tall and at least 1.5 inches but no more than 4.5 inches from the wall. There should be at least one handrail per rung, but I recommend installing handrails on both sides for extra support.

In this article, I’ll look at ways to help make your stairs less slippery and explain the pros and cons of each so you can decide which one is right for you.

Here are some of the best ways to make your stairs smoother. Read the full instructions for details on each method.

Carpet: Installing a carpet underlay is one way to help make your stairs less slippery. Stair rails protect wood, reduce noise and increase aesthetics. However, they are expensive, wear out easily and do not cover the entire width of the stairs. Another option is to install carpeted stairs. They are cheaper and easier to clean, but provide less coverage and are prone to slipping if not installed with a strong adhesive or proper hardware.

Use non-slip adhesive stair treads: These clear adhesive stair treads are a sophisticated and effective anti-slip solution for wooden stairs. They add a structural handle to the stairs while maintaining the beauty of the wood. Although easy to install, these steps require careful alignment and may leave some residue when removed. I use these themes in my home and highly recommend them.

Anti-Slip Flooring: This specially formulated liquid solution is available as a paint or clear coat. The solution binds the fine particles together to form an anti-slip surface. The main advantage of this option is that it increases traction while maintaining the natural look of hardwood. However, these coverings are less effective than carpet or stairs and require painting every few years.

Make sure your stairs meet standards: Older stairs may not meet modern construction standards, increasing the risk of accidents. Stairs must be at least 36 inches wide, have a riser of no more than 7 ¾ inches, and be at least 10 inches deep. Handles should be placed 34-38 inches high and 1.5-4.5 inches from the wall.

One of the most common ways to make stairs less slippery is to carpet them. Not only do rugs make your stairs safer by providing a grippy surface, but they can also be a fun addition to your home’s decor.

Stair gliders are carpets that go down the stairs but do not cover the entire width of each step.

The advantage of the stairs is that they cover the entire depth (not the width) of each step, protect the wood from damage, reduce noise, look good and, most importantly, make the stairs less slippery for you.

Refinishing Hardwood Stairs

The disadvantages of stair treads are that they can be expensive, dirty and difficult to clean, difficult to clean, and the carpet around the edge of each step can become worn and slippery over time.

If you decide to go the carpet route, your other option is to use carpeted stairs. Stair rugs are individual pieces of carpet that you can place on each stair separately.

Carpet tapes are cheaper than using carpets and are very easy to clean. You can easily remove them, clean the wood underneath and clean the grooves, or soak them in soap and water. Most importantly, when installed correctly, the carpet’s surface fibers provide traction and reduce the risk of slipping.

If you use carpet, choose to install stairs or stairs, use low-pile carpet and ensure proper installation. High-quality rugs are easy to trip over and can do more harm than good. If you don’t install the mat correctly, it can slip, bunch up, and create the effects you want to avoid.

Popular Stair Tread Cover Ideas

Next time you’re on the stairs of an office building, look down. On each step you can see thick black tape to prevent slipping. Although it will make your stairs safer, I do not recommend using this type of glue in your home. Black tape on wooden stairs doesn’t look good, and commercial stairs have a rough, smooth paper-like texture that can tear your feet.

Fortunately, many companies make clear anti-skid tape that you can buy cheaply on Amazon and install by wrapping the sticky side of the rails over each step.

These anti-slip treads effectively prevent slipping by adding a slight roughness to the surface of each step. The texture provides enough friction to prevent slipping, but is comfortable even when worn barefoot. They are transparent and difficult to detect unless you are actively looking for them.

One of the best features of anti-slip tapes is that they are simple and easy to install.

How To Paint A Stairway Banister (no Sanding At All!)

All you have to do is remove the paper from the back of the steps, place the steps about an inch from the edge of each step, and smooth out any air bubbles with the included roller.

The cheesecloths I used were pre-cut to 24″ x 4″, came in a pack of 15 and included a small roller so you can smooth out any air bubbles underneath. This is a great product that I highly recommend, but don’t just take my word for it, check it out on Amazon, where it has tons of mostly great reviews.

Adhesive stairs have some disadvantages. First, it can be difficult to lay them completely flat. If you’re a perfectionist like me, you might be frustrated that you can’t get them into the exact position you want. You have to twist them side to side with each step, which makes it difficult to keep a straight line.

Second, wooden stairs have natural bumps and cracks, so you can’t completely avoid air bubbles. Below is a picture of my stairs after many attempts to smooth out the air bubbles by hand and roller. You can see that there are some bubbles on the top step, which makes the tread less transparent and easier to see than the steps below.

Stair Rods: With Or Without?

Finally, removing them from the ladder can cause less damage. Some customers complain that it leaves a small amount of residue that you have to clean off. Others complained that the paint on the stairs had hardened. This is fine if you have smooth stained wood floors, but I would avoid this product if your stairs are stained.

Anti-slip floor coating is a liquid solution that you can apply directly to your wooden steps to make them less slippery. If you don’t want to change the look of your stairs by adding carpet, or if you don’t want to deal with the small problems of sticky stairs, using non-slip flooring is a great option.

Anti-slip floor coverings come in the form of paint or clear coating. Small particles are included in the coating to add friction to the wood surface, but are not visible to the naked eye.

The main advantage of this option is that you achieve the goal of making the stairs less slippery without losing the beauty of natural wood.

How To Make A Diy Stair Runner

First, it won’t last forever. After a few years, the anti-skid components of the finish will wear out and you will need to apply a new coat of paint.

Second, it doesn’t provide the same traction as non-slip adhesive carpet or stair treads. This coating is designed to reduce the smoothness of the floor, but the fine particles in the finish cannot be compared to the friction created by a carpet layer or specially designed sticky steps.

Accidents are more likely to occur on stairs that are outdated and do not meet today’s building codes. If your stairs are not deep enough or the distance between each step is too large, you are putting yourself and your household at risk.
