The first thing you need to do is remove the old carpet. It can be dirty and dusty when you remove it, so wear a dust mask if necessary. Remove nails or old nails from steps and posts. Use a clothes pan and bar if necessary.

Clean anything that gets new paint with TSP or green cleaner. Be especially careful with tracks and areas that may have been built up over the years. If you don’t get this spot right, your paint won’t hold up well and may peel or peel.

There are many cheap and fast steps to choose from online and in stores. Pre-made stairs are bought by the round leg or by the yard. Always order extra so you can cut it around.

Big box stores carry carpet runners near the stadium, but the selection is limited. Carpets are easy and inexpensive to find online, and there are many options to choose from. I liked the idea of using a professional runner and found many options online. Traditional shops carry the cups, but they charge you to build the edges, which takes away the budget-friendly part of the project. They are also thin, lightweight and provide padding under the runway.

Always start with a fresh cut on your lawn! Don’t think that what you get is big above or below. I promise, it’s not.

Use a double square or something similar to draw a straight line. I used a pair of scissors to cut out the inner circle just like the outer rug. It gave me better control than a knife and a straight point.

Then you will add a stick to the edge line to bind the edge. I found mine near the rug at Home Depot. You can also use the service I found online, I think it will work well too. This is self-explanatory. Remove the backing, place it on the edge of the carpet and press. Fold the corner like my picture below.

If you want to use stair runners on your stairs, mix and match the runners on the bottom of the stairs or on the sides of the posts. Place the bottom of the stairs where the beam and step meet, then the side of each step. The cover will not be attached to the sides. It appears to have curved steps.

If you are not using a stair runner on your stairs, then tape the floor with the side posts and down the stairs before attaching the runner to the stair. You will see it in the picture below.

When you are done with the last step, attach the runner to the last post near the bottom. Measure the required length and cut the end by cutting a new cut as a starting point and secure the end with self-adhesive tape.
